photo The Playground Coffee 1.jpg
Here are 21 cafes in the far west of Singapore that you probably have never heard of. And we mean the extreme west, like Pioneer to Dover so cafes in Holland Village and Bukit Timah are not covered in this listicle. The independent cafes featured are not part of any chains and are not located in shopping malls. If you're planning a cafe-hopping trip to the west side, our little list might be of help!

Olivia & Co @ Suntec City (between Towers 1 & 2)

photo Olivia amp Co Suntec Soft Shell Crab Burger 1.jpg
The modern diner occupies an eye-catching spot right in the centre of the mall and sports an interesting industrial look, complete with vintage touches. Their menu is largely inspired by flavours from all over the world and this is evident in the cover of their menu where global iconic landmarks are pieced together meticulously. Being in a mall that sees large throngs of executives, Olivia & Co has lined up a cast of salads, superfood juices and sandwiches to cater to them too.

The Populus Coffee & Food Co. @ 146 Neil Road

photo populus coffee cafe neil road 14.jpg
My fourth visit to Populus was an immense treat. I have been raving about their Spring Onion Pancake and Fried Chicken since my first trip there and I was so happy that we were gonna have it that evening too! Populus has been around for just about six months but everytime I'm there, they're always packed. That says alot about them, doesn't it? I had expected the place to be quieter during dinner time but I was wrong. Populus is truly, popular.

Atlas Coffeehouse @ Duke's Road

 photo atlascoffeehouse3.jpg
The good people behind my favourite coffee haunt, Assembly Coffee, has opened up Atlas in a more accessible spot in Bukit Timah. With an expanded menu and a bigger space, I wasn't the least bit surprised to find Atlas packed to the brim as I walked in on their second day of operation.

Clinton Street Baking Company @ Purvis Street

 photo P9199145.jpg
Just look at that stack of fluffy goodness. The Banana Walnut Pancakes ($18) at Clinton Street Baking Company were moist and each piece had a thin base of mashed bananas that kept the entire combination tantalizing throughout. It doesn't get boring, especially with their signature maple butter and I found myself going back to this repeatedly even when there were other dishes on the table. This is seriously my favourite pancakes in Singapore now!

The Bravery @ 66 Horne Road

 photo P5184720.jpg
Its been a long long time since I last paid a visit to The Bravery but we decided to head there for brunch one Monday morning! I've always remembered the pancakes to be yummy so I recommended that to my partner-in-crime for the day while I grabbed a burger. Burger at 10am? Yupp, that's how I roll.

Miam Miam @ Bugis

Media Invite

 photo PC290818.jpg
With two outlets in Singapore and breaking into other countries step by step, Miam Miam has brought to Singapore delicious fare made from scratch using top-grade ingredients. Dishes are not only affordable and innovative, but bound to leave an impression and have you craving for more

Featured here is one of the most popular items at Miam Miam, the Miam Miam Spaghetti. A large plate of generous ingredients atop a bed of spaghetti that has the most interesting texture that I've ever encountered. Honestly quite mindblown by the mouthfeel of the spaghetti!

(CLOSED) Becasse @ Dempsey

 photo P8097243-1.jpg
Becasse made it onto my list of places to visit after pictures and pictures of their signature milkshake invaded my instagram feed. And I was really excited about coming here, I think I said "Omg I can't wait" like twenty times before and after dinner haha

Drury Lane

Taking its name from a street in one of my favourite cities, London, Drury Lane is one of the latest additions to the already cafe-packed Duxton area.

(CLOSED) Societe Canteen

I used to go to Cluny Court like every week and it has really changed a great deal since a good 4 years ago. Many shops have come and go and Societe Canteen is one of the newer kids on the block. It is located where Marble Slab used to be.

Parking is available in Cluny Court itself and Serene Centre but you could also try the private housing estate just round the corner

Opened by an Australian, Societe Canteen aims to bring you a piece of Australia's coffee and cafe culture.

Iced Latte - $6.50
Decent coffee but a little too acidic

Photobucket
Iced Chocolate - $6.50
We liked the latte better than the chocolate. We didn't quite like the texture of the drink and perhaps, we would have preferred a little more milk

Photobucket
Eggs Benedict - $16
Poached eggs with bacon and hollandaise sauce on brioche

The baked beans in tomato puree were really delicious! They were savory, sweet and delightful. The brioche was good too! The first poached egg that X dug into was quite overcooked and we were disappointed but the second egg was perfectly done and saved the day haha. But the highlight for us would definitely be the baked beans!

Photobucket
Salted Caramel Pancakes with Bananas - $13
Three fluffy pancakes with homemade salted caramel sauce and fresh banana slices

When I saw salted caramel, I knew I was gonna get this! Three thick pieces of fluffy pancakes with delicious salted caramel! The portion was too huge for me and I was already bursting after the second piece. A great item for brunch especially when it's so affordable! I'm sure diners could do with a little more bananas and salted caramel though!

The cafe also has cupcakes and pastries. I was wondering if their pastries are from Tiong Bahru Bakery when I saw Kouign Aman on the menu haha.

Societe Canteen is a good place for catch-ups and lazy afternoons with its laidback vibe and reasonably priced fare. The staff were bright and cheery too and the food was served relatively quickly. The only thing that I really didn't like about the place was how our table had quite a number of bigger-than-usual ants.. Hope they would do something about it!

Hoshino Coffee

Located in the extended wing of Plaza Singapore, Hoshino Coffee has been attracting many patrons. The restaurant was packed, as expected, on a Saturday evening and we waited for about 20 minutes before we got a table for four.

Iced Royal Milk Tea - $7.50
This is different from their iced milk tea but the waitress wasn't able to convey to us what the difference was.

Photobucket
The milk tea comes with a scoop of cream but the milk tea was diluted, and very bland. At $7.50, this is severely overpriced.

Photobucket
Iced Cafe Latte - $7.50
For a small cup of coffee, this cup has more ice than coffee. It was diluted before long and wasn't enjoyable. Once again, it's a very pricey and below average cup of coffee.

We also ordered a mango smoothie - $7. I didn't get a picture of it. But it tasted so raw, and it was practically sugarless. We asked for it to be changed because it tasted so bad. But it came back, almost the same. The drinks were extremely disappointing.

Photobucket
Tomato Omu - $15
The tomato cream sauce was savory and tasty. It goes very well with the rice and eggs. However, the portion of seafood is quite pathetic.

Photobucket
Pescatora Seafood Pasta - $15
The pasta was nicely done and well-cooked.

Photobucket
Fuwa Fuwa - $15.80
This looks really interesting and we just knew that we had to get it. Its very fluffy and eggy and there's rice, cuttlefish and mushrooms underneath the fluffy cloud of egg. It was pretty yummy

Photobucket
Pancake with chocolate banana and soft serve - $13.50
A single thick fluffy pancake coupled with only a few slices of bananas and a much melted side of soft serve. This dessert was less than satisfactory and definitely expensive. The pancake was too dry and tasted more like bread. Also, there were too few pieces of bananas.

Photobucket Vanilla Souffle - $9.80
The vanilla souffle was very eggy and we got quite sick of it after awhile. There's nothing really worth mentioning.

It was quite a disappointing experience at Hoshino. The drinks and desserts are overpriced but their main courses are worth a try. Also, it was difficult to get the attention of the staff and service wasn't really up to mark.

Chye Seng Huat Hardware

Ever since this cafe, opened by the people behind Papa Palheta, arrived on our local food scene, it has taken our brunch loving, coffee fanatic country by storm. And its not hard to see why they are so popular. Whats not to like about a cup of aromatic coffee in a reinvented rustic coffeeshop? It sure does help to have a name as cool as this.

Photobucket
I was so feeling the theme that day, I had to take some shots in black and white. This is one of my favourite.

Photobucket
Just like Papa Palheta, the entrance to the place is not at the front.

Expresso with milk(regular) - $5.50
Their coffee is top notch. I dont usually drink coffee without the sugar, but for this i just want to take in the aroma and the aftertaste of the coffee. The highlight of the day for me. Nothing beats a good cup of coffee for brunch.

Photobucket
Hot chocolate- $6.50

K ordered hot chocolate as it is her favourite hot drink and she is forever on the hunt for the best hot chocolate. CSHH's hot chocolate was pretty good, with a subtle hint of mint.

A dish for the meat lover (points to K) !
Patrick's platter - $16
Pork Rilette, Duck terrine, Parma ham

K liked the duck terrine the most. Cold meats on bread for brunch is a first for us. Pretty interesting.

Photobucket
Pancake stack with blueberries- $10

Its funny how you add 3 berries and this dish becomes blueberry pancakes. Haha. I enjoyed their butter, its fragrant and smooth but I cant find anything special about their pancakes. Decent, but nothing special.

Photobucket
Breakfast in a cup - $8

I was hoping to be surprised by the 'breakfast of the day' but it turned out to be a tad disappointing. A pile of vegetables, some mushrooms and a soft boiled egg over the top and that was it. If you're there to try their breakfast of the day, remember to ask whats in it first.

I fell in love with the interior of the cafe. Captures so much of the past and yet feels modern. Extremely well done, I would say. The coffee, as usual, is top notch but the food pales in comparison. Given the price point of the place, I would expect the food to wow my tummy.
