Dressed in beautiful hues and lovely shades, and basking in a warm glow and evening light, the stunning La Dame de Pic dazzled me with its beauty. The restaurant exudes such a comforting charm that makes you feel right at home, even with its fancy get-up and tableware. I knew, from the moment I stepped in, that I was in for one of the most unforgettable meals and nights of 2020, and my life. Helmed by Three-Michelin-Starred Chef Anne Sophie Pic, the only Asian outpost of her collection of restaurants has been making waves ever since its opening at the grand Raffles Hotel Singapore. Helmed by Chef Julien Royer, Odette is a 3-year-old fine-dining restaurant that has been awarded 2 Michelin stars in just its first year of operations. Inspired by Chef Julien's grandmother, Odette, Odette has debuted on Asia's 50 Best Restaurants at 9th place — the highest new entry of all time. If you've been to Jaan, you'll know that Chef Julien is brilliant, and exceptional in his craft. Sending out contemporary French cuisine in a tastefully decorated space in National Gallery, Chef Julien works under the watchful eye of the world, and aims to deliver what one would expect from an esteemed dining destination that has 2 of the most precious and prestigious stars to its name.

Le Bistrot du Sommelier - One of the Best French Restaurants

 photo intro_2.jpg

I used to be under the impression that one has to pay through the nose to have good French cuisine in Singapore. Especially for a heavy eater such as myself, I thought French fare, which typically is served in bijou portions, would leave me unsatisfied after my meal. Le Bistrot du Sommelier, however, proved itself as a great exception.

Gunther's

Restaurant Week

X and I didn't make any reservations this Restaurant Week after having been to 8 places during the last 2 Restaurant Weeks haha. We have tried every restaurant that we wanted to except that I really wanted to go to Gunther's! Gunther's is new on the list and I wanted to go really badly but X was super busy during Restaurant Week ): BUT, thank God for fellow food bloggers!

Charleen, Derrick, Nicole and I met at Gunther's for lunch. We were notified earlier on that we only had an hour to dine. Our reservation was at 11.15 and I only got there at 11.40! I almost panicked haha

Warm and fragrant mini baguette

 photo P3216478.jpg
Cold Angel Hair Pasta, Tomato, Mozzarella, Ham

A simpler rendition of their signature Cold Angel Hair Pasta, Oscietra Caviar. Even without the caviar, this dish was delicious right down to the last strand. Cold and springy pasta with paper-thin savory ham and chewy small blocks of mozzarella, heaven was never closer. Quite a generous portion for a starter but it was definitely insufficient! We were all craving for more!

 photo P3216479.jpg
Carpaccio Wagyu Beef, Tartare Style

Top quality beef that not everyone will take too. It's too raw for me but Derrick loved it!

 photo P3216485.jpg
Pan-roasted Foie Gras, "a la dragees" (additional $15)

Perfectly roasted and tantalizing foie gras that is topped with crunchy almond bits. The almond complemented the roasted foie gras so well and enhanced the taste of the lightly crisp and melt-in-your-mouth slab of happiness.

 photo P3216487.jpg

 photo P3216488.jpg
Love it to bits.

 photo P3216504.jpg
Pork Ribs, Provencale Style

A giant piece of pork rib coupled with extremely delicious tomato omu rice. The tomato omu rice was rich and tasty with hints of spices that do not overwhelm your tastebuds. Every bite of the pork rib was joy and you really can't help but relish it. Brilliant and impeccable.

 photo P3216506.jpg
Grilled Brittany Cod Fish, Couscous of vegetables

The cod fish pales a little in comparison to the pork ribs in terms of its portion and taste. The fresh cod fish was delicious with the creamy mushroom based sauce that it was partnered with. It does not leave as strong an impression as the pork ribs though!

 photo P3216515.jpg
English Breakfast Tea Bavarois, Salty Caramel

The pudding like Bavarois sits in a lemongrass infused sauce that tasted a little too strong on its own but was immaculate with the bavarois and the oh-so-good salty caramel. I took really long to eat this as I savoured every mouthful. Pure goodness.

 photo P3216527.jpg
Petit Fours

The thin almond cracker was fragrant and crunchy and the dark chocolate praline was really good. The madelaine was buttery and plain and probably the least outstanding but it was a simple end to the meal

 photo P3216532.jpg
Coffee

Gunther's is incredible, superb and just downright impressive. They're elaborate in every aspect, from the plating to service. For the cold angel hair pasta, the dish that it was served in was cold. The pasta was, thus, kept at its optimum temperature for consumption. For the pork ribs and bavarois, the dishes were warm. I was really impressed! The restaurant is cozy and unpretentious with a smart casual dress code. And service was top-notch. The chef also spoke to us personally asking us how we found the food. We were initially told that we only had an hour to dine but the dishes weren't served all that quickly so the meal was extended but we never felt pressured to rush into our food. It was truly a wonderful dining experience!

Le Cuisson

Conveniently located in a busy coffee shop near Buona Vista MRT and a short walking distance away from the nearest bus stop, La Cuisson might just be the place for you if you're looking for affordable and decent French food. Parking is readily available at the relatively huge carpark behind the coffeeshop. You'll have to drive towards NTUC and Hans to find the carpark!

 photo P3156434.jpg

 photo P3156442.jpg
Foie Gras Salad - $12
Pan seared foie gras, mesclun with house dressing

The salad was pretty average but the sweet apple bits were quite yummy

 photo P3156441.jpg
Sous Vide Pork Neck - $15
Cooked for 5 hours with low temperature, served with purple cabbage slaw and mash

The three pieces of meat sit atop a bed of mashed potatoes and also, a sauce that tasted very much like mustard. The sauce was strong and sharp and chokes you a little. The meat was nicely crisp on the outside but was too tough. Also, the portion was rather small and I was still hungry after I've finished it.

 photo P3156453.jpg
Angus Hanging Tender - $18
A flavourful cut of beef, served with mash, confit shallots and garlic

We weren't asked how we'll like the beef to be done when we were placing our orders. Thankfully, this cut of beef was not overly done. It was a little too bloody for us though. I liked how the beef is thinly crisp on the top layer and tender when you bite into it. The sweet caramelized onions were a much welcomed garnish that added sweetness to the dish. The portion was reasonable and I can understand why it is one of the more popular dishes! If you were to dine at La Cuisson, I recommend this!

The stall operates on a self-service system which is not exactly very efficient because they just tell you to come back in 5 to 10 minutes.

O'Batignolles

X and I were on the way to Club Street Social for brunch on a Saturday afternoon when we drove past O'Batignolles and I saw "Brunch from Paris". That got me excited haha. O'Batignolles is located just about 20 metres away from CSS. After looking at the menus from both places, we decided to have brunch here before heading to CSS for dessert. Parking is available right outside the restaurant.

Isn't the shop front adorable! Can't wait for our trip to Europe this May!

Hot chocolate - $6.50

The hot chocolate tasted more like a warm glass of milk with a very slight hint of chocolate. I was definitely disappointed

Photobucket
Eggs Benedict (with Swiss Coppa) - $13

I asked if I could change my salad to something else and the server kindly offered bacon! The hollandaise was more on the bland side but the savory parma ham made up for it. Pretty small portion though

Photobucket
Eggs Pacifico(with Smoked Salmon) - $13

X thought the salad was quite good and the rest of the dish to be just average. Also, the pieces of smoked salmon were rather small.

Photobucket
Mini Pain Au Chocolat - $3

Photobucket
The pain au chocolat was crispy and fluffy but I felt it wasn't fragrant or sweet enough

Photobucket
Cute little bucket!

Service was good and the servers were really nice and warm. However, we had to wait for quite a long while before our food was served. The cafe is simple but cozy and it's a really nice place to relax and spend a lazy weekend afternoon just reading the papers or watching the world go by.

Ciel Patisserie

Invited Food Tasting

This is my third visit to Ciel! The first time was when they were still located at Midlink Plaza, the second being a couple of months back and now a third time for an invited food tasting session! [:

Photobucket
Ciel means heaven or sky in French. And the bolded letters C and L would represent the initials of the founder and patissier, Chara Lum. Chara studied at the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu Paris and concentrated her knowledge, talent and expertise into opening a patisserie that aims to serve pretty, delectable and affordable desserts

Now located in Hougang, Ciel still receives a steady stream of customers as we see the patisserie almost fully occupied when we arrived at 1 in the afternoon.

Madeleines (Honey or Caramel) - 3 for $2

Photobucket
Raspberry Italian Soda- $2.80

Photobucket
Lychee Italian Soda - $2.80
The sodas are refreshing, and not too overwhelmingly gassy!

Photobucket
Unadulterated goodness, here we go!

Photobucket
Scone - $2.80
Dreamy cream scones, perfect with Ciel’s homemade red fruit jam.

X and I felt that the slightly fluffy scone was optimally buttery. It was good, especially with the smooth and light cream. However, it lacked the hard and crisp crust of a scone and felt more like bread or sponge cake.

Photobucket
Quiche (Ham and mushroom) - $3.20
Savory flaky tart shell baked with royal cream and your choice of ham, mushroom, or caramelized onion filling(s).

A savory quiche that contains two of my favourite things! Ham and mushroom! The quiche was rich, soft and delicate. Every bite was tasty and I adored the hard tart shell!

Photobucket
Lemon Meringue Tart - $4.20
Buttery sweet and crisp crust covered with luscious, pleasantly tangy lemon cream, topped with a smooth Italian meringue.

My favourite of the six! The meringue was so smooth and sweet and the feeling of it melting in our mouths is mmhmm, heavenly indeed! The lemon cream was refreshingly sour, and optimally sweet. Just the right balance between sweet and sour! Not many lemon tarts get that right! The soft texture of the meringue and lemon cream contrasted with the thin but hard tart shell really made me fall in love with this. It's no wonder that this is their bestseller for tarts!

Photobucket
Fuji - $5.20
A light green tea mousse complemented with a lychee gelee insert and a soft green tea sponge base.

Green tea lovers will definitely love this! The sweet lychee gelee spiced up the strong matcha and prevented it from getting boring. And the sponge base was a delightful addition to the delicious mousse!

Photobucket
Tiramisu - $3.60
Layers of lady-finger sponge and light Baileys-infused mascarpone mousse, dusted with cocoa powder, served in a cup.

The tiramisu is an intricate concoction of many ingredients and the one at Ciel managed to achieve a fine balance among all of its ingredients, making this tiramisu one of my favourite! In this tiramisu, you will be able to taste coffee, mascarpone, cocoa, a hint of alcohol and you'll be able to bite into fluffy sponge! The tiramisu was moist but not soaked. This is why we were able to bite into the sponge and every bite was a careful infusion of all the lovely flavours!

Photobucket
Strawberry Shortcake - $5.60
Lightly sweetened whipped cream and juicy fresh strawberries, sandwiched between layers of soft sponge cake.

The Strawberry Shortcake is the bestseller at Ciel. Having eaten this a couple of times, I can totally understand why. The sponge cake is very fluffy and light and when moistened with the sweet whipped cream, I don't see why anyone would not fall in love with it! I'm not a fan of sponge cakes, but this is one sponge cake that I'll not mind having any day!

Having tried many of their items, such as the Chocolate Caramel Tart, Chocolate Almond Tart, Satine, Oreo Cheesecake and Bombe, I have to say that my two favourites are undoubtedly the Chocolate Caramel Tart and the Lemon Meringue Tart! The Bombe is really good too! If you're looking for yummy desserts at affordable prices, look no further than Ciel! It's a pity that Ciel is so far away from where I stay.. They really should have an outlet in the west!

Do check out more of their goodies here! They do whole cakes, and customized ones for special occasions too! Also, they have another collection point at Newton if Hougang is too far away for you [:

We'll like to thank Chara and Jonathan for the invitation and for the wonderful desserts! [:
