Symmetry

One of our favourite things : Sunday Brunch

Haha X and I decided to head to Symmetry for brunch one Sunday afternoon. We had a pretty hard time finding a parking lot as the whole area was very crowded and all the lots were taken. So we parked opposite the main road beside a field.

It's a good thing that we checked the address of the place before we came here, or we'd have totally missed Symmetry because there isn't a signboard

We were greeted warmly by them haha

A cafe with a rustic charm. Totally love the brick walls and big windows.
A modern touch to a cottage-feel

Iced Latte - $5.50

The coffee was fragrant and good!

 Photobucket
Cute bottle of sugar syrup!

Photobucket
Affogato - $6
Fragrant coffee paired with a scoop of yummy vanilla icecream. Definitely one of the nicer affogatos around!

I wanted to get the croissant with smoked salmon and scrambled eggs but decided to try their Eggs Benedict instead.
Photobucket
Eggs Benedict - $20
Poached eggs, aged cheddar, smoked bacon, onion hollandaise

Photobucket

The eggs were not very well prepared. They were more like soft boiled eggs than poached eggs. The egg white was too runny. I really liked the sweetness of the caramelized onions. The sweet onions with the hollandaise kind of masked the taste of the other ingredients though. Also, the presence of aged cheddar made the dish more tasty but I kinda got quite sick of it towards the end. The dish comes with a crispy piece of hash potato and a portion of salad. It was definitely quite filling for me.

Photobucket
Big Breakfast - $24
Eggs - overeasy, maple glazed bacon, tomatoes, chicken cheese sausage, hash potato, mushrooms, jam and toast

The best items of this dish have gotta be the jam and toast. The toast was crisp and the butter carried a really yummy sweetness to it! I could just have the bread and butter on its own! The mushrooms and bacon were pretty average but the chicken sausage was a letdown. The sausage was huge but it wasn't tasty at all and it had the plasticky feeling when we tried to cut into it.

We enjoyed the ambience and vibe here and the service was good. The staff were attentive and efficient. Prices are slightly steep though.

I'll return for the jam and toast anytime. They should have a special jam and toast set!

Carpenter & Cook (II)

This was our second visit to Carpenter & Cook. I was dying to try the chocolate caramel tart which wasn't available on our previous visit.

Can't help but love the design and decor of the place

Iced Latte - $5.80

The latte was diluted and pretty bland.

Photobucket
Iced Mocha - $6

The iced mocha lacked the taste of chocolate and it was diluted too.

Photobucket
Pear Almond Cake - $5

The cake was a little too dry and there was just one thin slice of pear which was hardly sufficient. Also, the slice of dried pear did not carry much of the pear taste

Photobucket
Chocolate Sea Salt Caramel Tart - $6.20

As a fan of chocolate and salted caramel, this was heaven to me. Smooth chocolate ganache atop a layer of sea salt caramel in a crusty tart shell. This was too good.

Photobucket The tart was so good that I bought another one. And X bought two. It was quite a costly afternoon tea for us haha

It's nice to dine at Carpenter & Cook because everytime you return, you see new furniture and decorations in the store. Somewhat refreshing. Also, we really adore the vintage and laid-back vibe of the cafe. We feel that prices are slightly on the high side though. And the drinks can definitely be improved. This will not be our last visit for sure. Chocolate Sea Salt Caramel Tarts, I'll be back.

The Cliff

I was checking out the most romantic restaurants in Singapore when I came across The Cliff.
I was kinda really mesmerized by the picture of the private gazebo and was really excited to dine here.

X and I headed there for dinner on a Friday night. The Cliff is located at the far end of Sentosa, in Beaufort Hotel. It's pretty impossible to get there if you don't drive. Parking is free and available in the hotel premises.

Sorry about the quality of the pictures. It was too dark to capture the place clearly.
The entire restaurant is not air-conditioned.

White wine - $23

Photobucket
Mediterranean spice and virgin olive oil
The Mediterranean spice was very strong. It tasted very much like curry powder mixed with other spices.

Photobucket
Tomato bread, onion bread and baguette
The assortment of bread was warm and fragrant

Photobucket
Complimentary dishes to excite our senses

Photobucket
When I first looked at it, I was like "oooh! Scallop!" HAHAHA
It's actually a flaky biscuit with a slightly salty centre

Photobucket
A peppery and spicy drink that X didn't like and I didn't drink haha

Photobucket
Fine de Claire Oysters- $8 per piece
Having tried the Fine de Claire oysters at Onion, we were really excited about these oysters. And were hoping that they'd impress us more than the oysters from Lawry's! Sadly, the oysters weren't that fresh and they were pretty small too

Photobucket
Pan Seared Foie Gras - $36
Apple Celarie slaw, lemon compote, green apple espuma
I liked the ice cold green apple espuma. It was sweet and a little sour. you could taste the crunchy ice bits in it. The lemon compote was pretty interesting too. As much as they are good on their own, they just didn't complement the foie gras. The foiegras was warm, soft on the inside but it was hardly crisp on the out. Also, the taste of foie gras wasn't really brought out somehow. It wasn't tasty nor flavourful. We were definitely disappointed.

Photobucket
Veal Shank - $58
Risotto, potatoes, mushrooms with braised veal
It was the special main course of the day
This dish was very fragrant and the veal was extremely tender. The mushrooms and risotto went really well with the veal, each bringing their individual tastes while blending perfectly together.
Also, the portion was pretty big.

Photobucket Red Gurnard - $60
Butter fried, baby octopus, shrimp, clam, white wine sauce
The fish was fresh and well-cooked. Very soft on the inside and does not carry the fishy taste.
The foam tasted unique and was a little sour. It was quite special when mixed with the white wine sauce.
Other than that, this dish was an absolute disappointment.
There were only 3 shrimps. And by shrimps, I mean really tiny shrimps, about the size of the nail on my thumb. There were only 2 clams and 4 baby octopuses.
I can't help but feel that this dish was severely overpriced.

We were tempted to try the desserts but having been disappointed for most of our dining experience, we decided to forgo the desserts.

Despite the restaurant being less than a quarter occupied, we waited 35 minutes for our main courses to arrive. The waiter that attended to us was very courteous and he asked us if we wanted extra bread after noticing that we had been waiting for a substantial amount of time. Overall, this $230 meal was a letdown. After the meal, I asked a waitress where the private gazebo was. Turns out that its not exactly that private or romantic as shown in the picture on the website. We probably won't return again.
