Ciel Patisserie - New Outlet at Jalan Bukit Merah

photo Ciel Patisserie Jalan Bukit Merah 2.jpg
Ciel Patisserie has been around for a couple of years now. I remember visiting them when they were still located at a tiny corner in Bugis. Chara Lum, the founder of Ciel Patisserie, is my schoolmate from Anglo-Chinese Junior College who went on to Le Cordon Bleu in Paris. She has brought delightful and affordable French pastries to the neighbourhood of Hougang when she opened up her very own brick and mortar shop back in 2012. Following the success of their first outlet, and their online bakery business, Ciel Patisserie is ready to say hello and bring life to the quiet Jalan Bukit Merah estate.

(CLOSED)Big Lazy Chop @ Short Street (Selegie)

photo Big Lazy Chop Short Street 6.jpg
Six months old Big Lazy Chop might not be situated at the most easily located or eye-catching spot but it is actually pretty near town. It's just a short walk away from the famous Rochor Beancurd at Selegie. There's ample parking in the compound and the 90-seater has both an alfresco and air-conditioned area. At the helm of the kitchen is Chef Oh, who has more than 37 years of experience whipping up palate-pleasing fare. He has come up with around 30 sauces that diners can pair with meat or seafood options. The Salted Egg Yolk XL Spare Ribs ($20) is one of the most popular items here and I urge you to give these gigantic ribs a go!

(CLOSED)Mo'mor Izakaya by W. Martin @ Tanglin Post Office (Tanglin Road)

 photo Momor Izakaya Tanglin 9.jpg
Helmed by industry veteran Chef Martin Woo, Mo'mor Izakaya commands an eye-catching spot at the Tanglin Post Office, on street level. The contemporary izakaya house pushes out Japanese fare with a European flair in a charming setting and the oysters and Wagyu beef here have generated quite a buzz. The Matsusaka Wagyu Striploin ($9 per 10g) was unbelievably tender and melted gloriously as I savoured it oh-so-slowly. The flavour, the texture, just sublime.

Vatos Urban Tacos @ South Beach Quarter

photo vatos urban tacos south beach 4.jpg
The Ko-Mex chain has drawn alot of attention ever since it set foot on Beach Road. The place is dimly lit and seems to be a popular after-work hangout with the executives. Opened by three Korean Americans who grew up on authentic Mexican food and traditional Korean food, you can expect a clever fusion of the best of both Mexican and Korean cuisine here.

Pizzas & Wines @ Jamie's Italian (VivoCity)

 photo Untitled1_1.jpg
Jamie’s Italian at VivoCity now offers pizzas in their refreshed menu. The pizza dough is made fresh daily and shaped through gentle stretching which is the key to developing a crisp texture and crust. Pizzas are served on special stoneware plates which retain the heat and crispness of the pizza.

The Populus Coffee & Food Co. @ 146 Neil Road

photo populus coffee cafe neil road 14.jpg
My fourth visit to Populus was an immense treat. I have been raving about their Spring Onion Pancake and Fried Chicken since my first trip there and I was so happy that we were gonna have it that evening too! Populus has been around for just about six months but everytime I'm there, they're always packed. That says alot about them, doesn't it? I had expected the place to be quieter during dinner time but I was wrong. Populus is truly, popular.

I don't usually go back to the same dining establishment unless its for coffee or for a particular dessert that I really like (even then, it's really rare) but this is my fifth time at Salt Tapas & Bar. I'm always excited to be back here because I know I'll still be impressed, like I have been my past four visits.

(CLOSED)Aryaa @ Beach Road

 photo aryaa greek 6.jpg
My first encounter with Greek food was a memorable one. I had no idea what to expect. I know they use alot of herbs and cheeses in their cuisine but that's about all there is to my knowledge of this unique cuisine. I popped by Aryaa on Beach Road for lunch and was shown an extensive menu inspired by the culinary adventures of Alexander the Great who travelled across the Mediterranean to India.

Ele-CITRUS-fying Lemon Tarts & 8 New Classic Treats @ Tiong Bahru Bakery

photo Tiong Bahru Bakery Lemon Tarts.jpg
The classic lemon tart at Tiong Bahru Bakery now comes in three levels of sourness and I must say that its the best news I've heard in awhile. I've always loved lemon tarts but most of the tarts out there are way too sour for me. I love a refreshing kick of zingy-ness anytime but I always prefer more sweet than sour.

The newly rolled-out tarts are great because there's now a lemon tart for everyone! Level one sees an impeccable tart base filled with a creamy filling that is largely sweet with soft touches of tanginess. Level two (my favourite) was well-balanced with almost equal parts sweet and sour. Level three got me scrunching up my face and I would recommend it for those who truly enjoy very zesty treats.

On top of the lemon tarts, the dessert selection welcomes eight new additions crafted with top quality flour, butter and chocolate imported from France.
