The Carving Board

 photo P5034361.jpg
The Carving Board has taken the western part of our island by storm with its affordable and delectable selection. I popped by on Sunday night at 8pm and was the tenth person in the queue and little did I know that I would queue for 50 minutes just to place my order. Even though my food took about 20 minutes to arrive(which is short compared to the time I spent queuing), I was really unhappy about it. I mean, would you rather queue for 20 minutes and be able to sit down for 50 with your pals or would you rather stand and queue for 50 minutes and sit for 20? Well, I would rather the former.

That aside, I must say that the food was pretty good.

Gyu-Kaku @ CHIJMES

Media Invite

 photo P3313448.jpg
When life presents you with such intensely marbled Kuroge Wagyu from Kagoshima, what do you do? Well, I took a few moments to admire its beauty and thank the Gods before entrusting the experts to cook this to perfection. Then, I prepared myself for the fireworks that were about to go off in my mouth. I've had alot of barbecued beef, having been in Korea for a month. And even the best one that we had, which was really damn good, didn't come close to this.

Montana Brew Bar and Nookie Yogurt have taken the island by storm ever since their opening. With Montana Brew Bar boasting innovative and highly affordable waffles and Nookie Yogurt booting out deconstructed desserts in yogurt parfait form, its no wonder that these two establishments were an instant hit. And very cleverly connected to each other at PoMo too.

With two outlets in Singapore and breaking into other countries step by step, Miam Miam has brought to Singapore delicious fare made from scratch using top-grade ingredients. Dishes are not only affordable and innovative, but bound to leave an impression and have you craving for more

Featured here is one of the most popular items at Miam Miam, the Miam Miam Spaghetti. A large plate of generous ingredients atop a bed of spaghetti that has the most interesting texture that I've ever encountered. Honestly quite mindblown by the mouthfeel of the spaghetti!

Tom's Palette

After a very satisfying lunch at Gunther's, Derrick, Nicole and I decided to eat MORE. Haha, this is the first of our 3 destinations! Located not too far away and within walking distance is Tom's Palette, a very famous icecream shop.

We went to Tom's Palette around 2 and it was pretty packed!
 photo P3216538.jpg

It doesn't take long and much to notice how many people have been to this 8 year old icecream shop. From all the photographs on the tables to the napkins on the board, I'm convinced that Tom's Palette is definitely one of Singaporeans' favourite icecream hangouts!

 photo P3216540.jpg
They have a really wide and unique selection of flavours like Salted Egg Yolk, Milk, Salted Caramel Cheesecake, Candy Crush etc. We had a really difficult time choosing. Nicole sampled like almost all the flavours hahaha.

photo P3216536.jpg All of us had a cup of icecream each. Tom's Palette allows you to have two flavours even in their smallest cup! So I picked Salted Egg Yolk and Salted Caramel Cheesecake. The Salted Egg Yolk icecream was really yummy!!!

X had been wanting to eat here for I-don't-even-remember-how-long. So I made him very envious by sending him a picture of my icecream hahaha

There's a 10% student discount for tertiary students from specific institutions! So it's like only $3 for 2 flavours in the smallest cup! Super worth it!

Gunther's

Restaurant Week

X and I didn't make any reservations this Restaurant Week after having been to 8 places during the last 2 Restaurant Weeks haha. We have tried every restaurant that we wanted to except that I really wanted to go to Gunther's! Gunther's is new on the list and I wanted to go really badly but X was super busy during Restaurant Week ): BUT, thank God for fellow food bloggers!

Charleen, Derrick, Nicole and I met at Gunther's for lunch. We were notified earlier on that we only had an hour to dine. Our reservation was at 11.15 and I only got there at 11.40! I almost panicked haha

 photo P3216535.jpg

 photo P3216470.jpg
Warm and fragrant mini baguette

 photo P3216478.jpg
Cold Angel Hair Pasta, Tomato, Mozzarella, Ham

A simpler rendition of their signature Cold Angel Hair Pasta, Oscietra Caviar. Even without the caviar, this dish was delicious right down to the last strand. Cold and springy pasta with paper-thin savory ham and chewy small blocks of mozzarella, heaven was never closer. Quite a generous portion for a starter but it was definitely insufficient! We were all craving for more!

 photo P3216479.jpg
Carpaccio Wagyu Beef, Tartare Style

Top quality beef that not everyone will take too. It's too raw for me but Derrick loved it!

 photo P3216485.jpg
Pan-roasted Foie Gras, "a la dragees" (additional $15)

Perfectly roasted and tantalizing foie gras that is topped with crunchy almond bits. The almond complemented the roasted foie gras so well and enhanced the taste of the lightly crisp and melt-in-your-mouth slab of happiness.

 photo P3216487.jpg

 photo P3216488.jpg
Love it to bits.

 photo P3216504.jpg
Pork Ribs, Provencale Style

A giant piece of pork rib coupled with extremely delicious tomato omu rice. The tomato omu rice was rich and tasty with hints of spices that do not overwhelm your tastebuds. Every bite of the pork rib was joy and you really can't help but relish it. Brilliant and impeccable.

 photo P3216506.jpg
Grilled Brittany Cod Fish, Couscous of vegetables

The cod fish pales a little in comparison to the pork ribs in terms of its portion and taste. The fresh cod fish was delicious with the creamy mushroom based sauce that it was partnered with. It does not leave as strong an impression as the pork ribs though!

 photo P3216515.jpg
English Breakfast Tea Bavarois, Salty Caramel

The pudding like Bavarois sits in a lemongrass infused sauce that tasted a little too strong on its own but was immaculate with the bavarois and the oh-so-good salty caramel. I took really long to eat this as I savoured every mouthful. Pure goodness.

 photo P3216527.jpg
Petit Fours

The thin almond cracker was fragrant and crunchy and the dark chocolate praline was really good. The madelaine was buttery and plain and probably the least outstanding but it was a simple end to the meal

 photo P3216532.jpg
Coffee

Gunther's is incredible, superb and just downright impressive. They're elaborate in every aspect, from the plating to service. For the cold angel hair pasta, the dish that it was served in was cold. The pasta was, thus, kept at its optimum temperature for consumption. For the pork ribs and bavarois, the dishes were warm. I was really impressed! The restaurant is cozy and unpretentious with a smart casual dress code. And service was top-notch. The chef also spoke to us personally asking us how we found the food. We were initially told that we only had an hour to dine but the dishes weren't served all that quickly so the meal was extended but we never felt pressured to rush into our food. It was truly a wonderful dining experience!

(CLOSED) One Kampong Bahru

Bakery by day, bar and bistro by night.

One Kampong Bahru has been making waves with its delicious and highly affordable baked goods, and now, its tapas are in the limelight.
Relatively new to the food scene, the 3-month old bar and bistro has been fully packed and reserved for private events since its opening.

The two-level bistro is not that easy to locate, especially since 3 of the boys(including X haha) were lost when driving there. They specifically requested that I include this in this post so that nobody gets lost like them hahaha. Do check the directions on your computers before you make your way to One Kampong Bahru because the maps on your phones will lead you to a dead end on Spooner Road!

Parking is available right beside the bistro, and around it. It is also easily accessible by public transport, with a bus stop just about 50 metres away.

Level 2 which was closed for a private event.
Isn't this space perfect for a nice and cozy gathering?

While waiting for the lost kids to arrive, I had a cuppycake
Photobucket
Chocolate Salted Caramel Cupcake - $3
Delicious? Yes.

Photobucket
Mini Cranberry Cream Scones - $2.50
I was a little surprised that the scones do not come with any cream but well, after eating it, I realised that there isn't a need for cream. The scones were nicely moist, fluffy and soft!

OKB's wine selection will leave you slightly irritated because you just can't decide which wine to have! Their selection is pretty huge and what's most irritating is the price of each glass of wine. At $7 or $8 per glass, you just want to have a glass of every single wine available! Well, we say... don't drive there, and just drink to your heart's content!

Photobucket
Baronnie De Coussergues - $7

Photobucket
Mohua Estate - $8

Photobucket
Domaine Coussergues Chardonnay - $8

The co-owner of OKB, Kenneth, taught us the correct steps to really taste and appreciate the wine and we were all looking at him in amazement and admiration only to not follow any of the steps that he taught us hahaha

Asian-fusion tapas that are created by OKB's Peranakan chef!
Photobucket
Seared Scallops - $10
U.S Sea Scallops, Buak Keluak Oil

Fresh, juicy scallops which were slightly sour

Photobucket
Hot Wings - $8
Midjoints, Belachan Butter Marinade

Crispy and fragrant wings!

Photobucket
Pork - $16
Baby Back Ribs, Mustard sauce, Ginger Mustard Greens

Photobucket
The ribs are to be eaten together with the strongly flavoured greens. The ribs are a little dry but the moist greens will make up for that.

Photobucket
Fish - $14
Turmeric and Dill Catfish, Vietnamese Pesto, Rice Vermicelli

The catfish was fresh and soft and I liked it! The rest of the dish was pretty simple and average.

Photobucket
Chicken - $14
Seared Breast, Laksa Leaf Beurre Blanc, Starfruit Pickle

We all know that chicken breast meat is hard and dry, but certainly not the one at OKB. The two big pieces of chicken are really tender and juicy! This dish is also refreshingly sour and its the first chicken-based dish that I've liked in a long time!

Photobucket
Beef - $18
U.S Angus Roast, Gula Melaka Glaze, Herb Garnish

This was definitely the highlight for everyone. The tough chuck cuts are soaked in a water-bath for 25 hours before they are cooked. And the end result? Unbelievably tender and succulent beef.

Photobucket
The gula melaka glaze was sweet and tasty and it won my heart instantly. And for one of our friends who doesn't like beef to actually like it, can you imagine how good it was? Divine.

Photobucket
Passionfruit Macarons - $2/piece

Fat and full macarons with tangy passionfruit curd!

Photobucket
Salted Caramel Macarons - $2/piece

Want a taste of heaven? Try these.
Every bite screams immense gratification! Too good.

Photobucket
Lemon Cream Tart - $3.50

A thick and hard crust filled with lemon cream that has gotten the delicate balance of sweet and sour right. Possibly the best lemon tart I've ever had! So good that X and I each bought another haha

Photobucket
74% Dark Chocolate Brownie - $2.50

A rich and heavy brownie with a thin crispy top layer. Its texture is quite different from the average floury brownies. Yum.

Photobucket
Red Velvet, Chocolate Chocolate, Strawberry Chocolate - $3 each

The red velvet was our favourite of the lot!

Photobucket
Salted Caramel Macarons, again
Because they were so good, we bought ALL of them HAHA

Photobucket
Cinnamon Sticky Roll - $2

Forget the sticky bun at B Bakery or Simply Bread. Here's the best cinnamon sticky roll ever! It is amazingly soft and its cinnamon sugar coat does not harden! And it is only $2?!

Photobucket Mini Cranberry Scones
Raspberry Jam Scone - $2

The prices of the baked goodies are really crazy affordable, don't you think! And they're so delicious!

Do make a reservation at OKB before you head down because they're almost always fully booked!

OKB is currently understaffed so service isn't exactly up to mark but I'm sure they're working on it.

Do let us know what you think of OKB!
